We had an interesting discussion today about a trial program we’ve been running on Yahoo and MSN, to show paid search results for meaningful content in Worldcat. Science Fair projects and related content has been the clear victor, in the results. Likely any Public Library Reference librarian who’s driven the desk a year or two could tell you that, but it was good to see the online world bore out the same results.
Recipes were also a big hit–little wonder with the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday in November and baking season in full swing.
Dust off that online cookbook display and consider digitizing a few always-out cookbooks–people are looking for them online!

These are the kids’ finished science fair projects. The Princess and Neighbor Girl’s project asked if video games can be a form of exercise. They had participants complete a dance routine from Just Dance – they checked pulses before and after. Then they had their participants jump rope or do jumping jacks for the same amount of time and compared the heart rates for each. The Bear and The Boy’s project asked what juice cleans a penny the best. They put 12 pennies in 12 cups of different juices and checked the progress over time. I am very proud of all the hard work that they all put in to these projects.

Soil erosion is a big problem world wide and it is important to learn about preventing it from a very early age. This is why we have this 4th grade science fair project on soil erosion. We all need to take responsibility today.
Here are some of the Scary Facts making these 4th grade science fair projects essential!
- Did you know that the world’s deserts grows by about 16,000 square miles a year?
- In the US alone about 7 billion tonnes of very valuable topsoil is eroded by streams and rivers, as they carry the topsoil away.
- Did you know that about 75% of the rocks on earth are made up of small grains and particles that are pressed together under the weight of tons of water over very long periods? These rocks are called “sedimentary rocks.”
This is a really worrying situation, don’t you agree?
Well this is one of the reasons for our 4th grade science fair projects. Here we are going to be looking at one of the methods we can use to prevent this. We are going to do an elementary science fair project to find out whether planting grass or other plants in areas with a lot of erosion can help.
What you will need for this science experiment:
- Some easy growing grass seeds
- Two rectangular cake pans
- 2 Tick books of the same size
- Enough soil to fill the pans
- A jug to pour the water with
- Water
What you have to do
- First of all you have to fill one of your cake tins with the soil.
- Plant your grass seeds in this cake tin.
- Water this tin thoroughly with water.
- Place this tin in a sunny spot where the grass can grow well.
- Now you have to gently water your seeds and make sure that the soil in the pan is moist at all times without over watering.
- Wait for your grass to grow about 3 inches high.
- Fill up the other cake tin with soil.
- Water it just enough to be as moist as the tin with your grass in it.
- Now you have to place the one end of both your tins on your books to make them lie at an angle.
- Fill your jug with water and pour the water down the cake tin without the grass.
- Note what happens.
- Now you pour the water down the cake tin with the grass growing in it.
- Make a note of what happens.
- What is the difference?
- What is the reason for the difference?.
- write down your explanation.
What happens here is that in the pan without grass some of the dirt is carried away with the water. This is what happens in nature in places where there is nothing to stem the flow of water. In the pan with the grass growing in it, the grass stems the flow of the water and less soil is carried away with the water. So, by planting indigenous grass and other indigenous plants in areas where soil erosion is a problem, the soil erosion can be slowed down.
This is one of our 4th grade science fair projects that stresses the importance of caring for nature. Damage done today will take a very long time to repair and it is all of our responsibility to preserve nature as best we can.

The students constructed it for entry into the Automotive X contest, with a grand prize of $ 10 million — the only high schoolers in the nation to do so. They are reworking their design to improve their chances of winning, and hope to get the car up to 100 MPG.

Her robot, built of the plastic blocks, is capable of sniffing out toxic chemicals and other hazards, keeping humans at a safe distance. Problems with Ovarian Cancer Treatment, Shree Bose:Taking top prize at the Google Science Fair, Bose will get to spend several weeks studying marine life in the Galapagos Islands. The work that netted her this prize is awe-inspiring coming from a teenager. Bose uncovered a number of problems with popular ovarian cancer treatments and drugs, producing a report that would be more at home in a medical journal than a high school classroom. Rather than upgrading computers with more memory, Ellis has developed software that analyzes how programs are running and spreads out their needs over all the CPUs to make everything more quickly. His amazing software netted him $ 50,000 and the rest of the world a way to speed up computers that may have otherwise been tossed out.

Quantum Computing for Difficult Computational Problems, Yale Fan:Despite his name, this young genius chose Harvard over Yale to continue working on his education. Part of what got him there, undoubtedly, was this impressive bit of science. Yale’s research project, titled “Adiabatic Quantum Algorithms for Boolean Satisfiability” analyzed the applications of quantum computing for solving some of the most complex and difficult computational problems. Most adults don’t have half an idea what that even means, so it’s all the more impressive that this teen was already studying it in high school.

Science Fair Projects and Leprechaun Traps
8:02 AMI am a horrible mother.
I am one of those moms who think that if my child is assigned a project, he or she should probably be the person who completes the projects.
Crazy, isn’t it?
My thought process behind this is the following:
1) I have already graduated school.
2) There is probably a reason they are given the assignment.
Oh yeah, and I have nasty memories of B and C students winning the science fair each year with projects they CLEARLY did not do. So I harbor a little anger about that. I also throw in girl scouts, boy scouts (yes, I was an actual boy scout) and 4-H as other areas that I would shake my head and think “There is no freaking way he did that…” In fact, in 6th grade, I went around and asked kids questions about their projects– questions that were on their tri-fold boards- and snarkily prided myself on the fact that they had no clue what the basic science concepts were that they had so wonderfully depicted for their projects.
Amazing I wasn’t more popular…
Anyhow, so the time has come for my children to be given these tasks. Last week were the leprechaun traps and this week are the science fair projects.
My daughter is in kindergarten. She has difficulty finishing a meal, let alone designing and making a trap to catch imaginary creatures. I appreciate the project- it’s a fun task for us to do together. I actually asked my son, Skip, to help her. He’s a future engineer and loves this sort of thing. They also have been fighting like cats and dogs and I thought it was a great opportunity for them to work together. I also was very tired from work and not feeling particularly creative.
So they did it. I helped very little. It was cute. It is also looked like they had done it.
The traps that showed up, however, clearly were nice parent projects. Not all, but most. I think the kids may have signed their names They were elaborate and fancy. They were not done by 6 year olds. My daughter noticed. I told her to be very proud– she did hers all by herself. She didn’t look too particularly proud. She looked annoyed that I hadn’t stayed up until midnight designing the ultimate trap.
Oh well.
Then it’s science fair. Neither Skip or Zoe have to do a project. It’s optional until 4th or 5th grade. They like science. It seems like a good exercise. And as my son, who did a fantastic 6 week project comparing tap water versus Brita filtered water to grow a bean plant (surprisingly, the tap water grew a much better plant) learned last year, I absolutely, positively will not “do” the display board. I will help. I will offer typing and spell check. I will not do it. And if I say “Mommy has to go out of town so we have to have it done by Friday” I mean we have to have it done by Friday. After all his hard work, he did not turn in a display board. There were tears. Especially when we still went to Science Night and he didn’t get a ribbon.
Oh well.
This year, he got it done. A little later than I would have liked, but part of that was my fault this year. And yes, I had to stay on them both to finish. Well, actually not my daughter. Her board looks AMAZING. No kidding. Better than anything I could have dreamed up. Give her a blank palette and she creates art. I don’t know if she really understands why the white flowers turned colors after putting them in colored water, but she’s at least got a general idea that the stem works like a straw. My son put Mentos into soda. Warm soda does explode more than cold soda. We think. We really didn’t have a good way to measure. But that was part of the process.
So the boards are done. They learned a little something. I helped a little bit. But it is theirs.
And when they take them to school there will probably be some that are fantastic and done by parents- although I have to say, my daughter’s really blew me away– but hopefully my kids will have the confidence that they can complete a project.
I’ve always wondered what happened to the kids whose parents did their projects. Some I know washed out before high school. Some bailed in college. Some are completely fine. But I wonder if the ones who barely got through high school might have been better off if they had learned, as my son did last year, that there are consequences for not doing your work? Did their parents help actually undermine their confidence by making them think that their work wasn’t good enough? Did the kids appreciate the parents help?
And even sadder- half the kids will have crap because their parents didn’t care at all. Or didn’t read the newsletters and even know there was a project.
It seems like a fine line- overparenting, underparenting– it’s a crap shoot in some ways.
Every day I feel like I’m walking a fine line- too strict- too lenient- too hovering- too disconnected.
But I will never do my kids’ homework. I may be the meanest mom in the world, but I’m okay with that.
And some day I hope they appreciate it.
Examples Of Science Fair Projects - Alternative Bread Mold Project
8:01 AMIn this example science fair project you are going to find out what are the ideal conditions for the growth of molds on bread and what can be done to prevent the growth of mold. Molds are fungi and with bacteria they grow on organic materials and causes (or helps with) decay.

11. Keep this up for a week.
12. You are now ready to write your conclusion, remember to give the reasons for what has happened to your slices of bread. Include your control in your conclusion. Your control shows what happens when you do not do anything, this id how you can draw the correct conclusion about what has happened to your other slices of bread.
